A Meeting of the Minds on Economic
Development
The Siskiyou County Economic
Development Council (SCEDC) organized a day-long indus try tour on September
8, 2006, that highlighted two of Siskiyou County’s
largest employers: Roseburg Forest
Products in Weed and Nor-Cal
Products in Yreka. The focus of the successful event was to
establish more of a dialogue between industry and policymakers.
Attendees learned how these businesses utilize everything from
innovative technology designed to promote both good working conditions
and a healthy economy to the county’s Enterprise Zone tax incentives in
order to prosper and grow in Siskiyou County.

The occasion began with lunch and introductions at one of the
sponsors,
the Workforce Connection in Weed. A large representation of city
and county officials, directors of various employment agencies,
consulting firms, College of the Siskiyous and the employers themselves
turned out for the special event. Tonya Dowse, Executive Director
of the SCEDC estimated that approximately 150 people attended the
catered dinner.

Speakers included, Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa;
Victoria
Bradshaw, Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development; Ben
Higgins; State Director of USDA Rural Development; Yolanda Benson,
Deputy Secretary for Jobs, Economic Development & Trade California
Business, Transportation & Housing Agency; Wayne Schell, President
of California Association for Local Economic Development; Marcia
Armstrong, Chair Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors (SCEDC Board of
Directors); and Greg O’Sullivan, President Economic Development
On-Call.
